History

For the past decade the DOT&PF has been evaluating two separate, but inter-related projects in the Chignik area. These projects are the Chignik Connectors project and the Chignik Regional Airport Master Plan.  The long-term vision for these projects is to provide safe and reliable transportation in the area.  The Chignik Connectors project proposes to construct a road linking the communities of Chignik Bay, Chignik Lake, and Chignik Lagoon in order to reduce costs and improve regional efficiencies. The purpose of the Airport Master Plan project is to identify and evaluate a potential sub-regional airport within the Chignik region.

The environmental and design costs are estimated to be between $5 and $7 million. The construction cost is estimated at $70 to $95 million.  Currently, only $7 million in State and Federal funding is committed to the project.  Future funding is uncertain as the amount of federal funding available for road and airport projects is expected to decrease in the upcoming years.

As a result of the initial reconnaissance efforts, DOT&PF determined building both projects at the same time and in their entirety would be cost prohibitive and determined that phasing the projects toward the long-term vision would be necessary. As a result, DOT&PF and its consultant team, HDR Alaska, Inc. has gone back to the communities and is actively working to develop a realistic and achievable project phasing to meet the most immediate transportation needs of the communities.

Now What?

DOT&PF is now in the process of working with the communities through a Transportation Advisory Group to develop a phased approach to meeting the long-term goal of connecting all three communities.

This website will keep you informed of the project’s process, including project reports, activities, schedule, and upcoming meetings. DOT&PF encourages you to submit questions, ideas, and comments relating to this important project.
